Do the twist

As part of my ongoing effort to be my own advocate for my scoliosis, I asked the hospital to send me a copy of my xray. This is remarkably easy to do now, what with digital media and all. They sent me a CD with a little program that pops up the xrays. Oddly enough, it only runs on Windows.

Anyway, I’ve decided that being my own advocate is the only way to proceed with this. The alternatives I was presented with at my initial consult just weren’t acceptable, which was how I ended up on the alternative track to start with.* So I’m collecting all relevant information and keeping copies on my own. That way if I get stuck hopping to a new doctor at some point, I don’t have to go through all of this again.

Anyway, for your amusement, I present thoracic scoliosis with a 19 degree curve:

*How can anyone, let alone a back specialist, tell people that their options are surgery, with fabulous new metal rod (bionic woman powers not included) or 45 minutes of aerobic exercise a day? Because climbing stairs will magically fix spine alignment issues, or something.

Yikes, it's like a serpent. I'm also curious how 45 minutes of aerobic exercise a day is going to help it. And do they mean 45m/day for the rest of your life? What if you skip a day? What if you skip a week? It sounds difficult to keep up.

Yeah, I have no idea what the guy was thinking. Maybe it was supposed to reduce the pain I was feeling until I could have been operated on? He was a nutter.

Your alternative link seems to 404 for me?

Which alt link? The photo? Or one of the others?

Thanks. It's fixed now.

link was also broken for me too.'s actually not clear at all when one meets you that you have such a serious deviation from the normal spinal curve. Has this gotten better since the photo was taken?

I find that western medicine really, really, really wants to fix things NOW. And when they present an 'alternative' like the exercise's in such a way that they want to scare you into the right NOW option. Some really great people become doctors and then only ever seem to offer the latest surgeries, etc. as options for matter what the patient says he or she can or can't rationalize for him/herself.

We should remember to chat up medical stuff some time. I'm facinated by both eastern and western medical treatments and traditions and especially about combining both to get the best results possible.

The image was from February. I'm supposed to go back in a few months for another, but I'll probably try to stretch it for a while. Xrays just aren't fun to be doing frequently.

You know, it seems to me like western medicine is all about skipping to the cutting. Wait for it to get bad enough, and then chop you into bits to fix whatever's wrong. That just doesn't seem like a good long-term strategy to me. Scar tissue just doesn't do things the way regular flesh does.

On the upside your heart area and lungs look good...

True, no fibroids. or lumps. Still weird, though.
