One of my coworkers has family in Thailand and still hasn't heard from them after the massive quake and resulting tsunami. I can't imagine that with that kind of devastation, there will be they'll be reporting in anytime soon. The phones are probably swamped. I hope that his family is OK. I know how he must feel, since Dad was out of touch for a while right after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

Since my husband works for a non-profit that monitors geologic activity, I had to check out their website to see if it registered the quake. Of course, it does - and in pretty colors too. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that Sumatra moved a measurable distance. We've got tsunami evacuation signs all along the coast, but it seems so silly. Like there would be time to get away or you could make it through the traffic jam that would result from any warning that would come. But I guess if they make people feel better about being vulnerable to that sort of activity, they're worth it. It's all about the illusion of control anyway.
